Upwood Art Group was started by Frances Ashfield,
some two and a half years ago. Frances is an experienced artist
and sculptor who, for many years, has taught the subject to adults
and children, including special needs groups and covering all the
various art media..

The group operates as a sort of ‘mutual
aid society’, the members learning from each other as
well as from Frances. All levels of ability are represented
from raw beginners to the very competent.
We usually meet each Saturday morning, 10.00am-12.00noon,
in Upwood Village Hall, excepting Bank Holiday weekends and
one or two other weekends, e.g., Village Fete, Ramsey Art
Exhibition., etc. There is nominal fee of £2.00 per
session to cover costs. On fine, warm days we may take our
drawing boards out and about to somewhere in the locality
such as, for example, Houghton Mill. |
The first item on the agenda is morning coffee
or tea to fortify us while we’re setting-up our drawing
boards and swapping the gossip, so we usually settle down
to business about 10.15am. Everything is very relaxed and
informal, with plenty of chat and laughter. Subject matter
ranges from still life to occasional Life Drawing –
clothed models!!! – or outdoor subjects. For those who
need help at any time, i.e., all of us, there is always someone
to advise constructively
One of the daunting things about getting started in art is
the very confusing range of media in the shops. “Which
brushes should I buy? Which is the best way to start –
watercolour, acrylic, oil, etc., etc?” Well, the good
news for newcomers is, “Don’t bother about buying
paints, brushes, paper and what-have-you”, because we
have materials available which beginners are welcome to use
free of charge while they are ‘finding their feet’.
As you get to know what you like to work with, you will gain
the confidence to go and buy your own materials - some more
good news is that membership of the group entitles you to
a discount at some of the art shops in the area.

So, why not pop in one Saturday soon and see what we’re up to?
You’ll be very welcome and, if you feel like ‘having a
go’ ask for John, Sam or Jackie and we’ll help you get
started. |
