Hailing from the Cambridgeshire village of Upwood and formed in February 2014 with the accent on having fun and making music together, Upwood Ukuleles has gone from strength to strength, playing at an ever increasing variety of events ranging from WIs and Day Centres to private parties and formal concerts. The group has also performed on Radio Cambridgeshire and regional radio on several occasions. More recently the UpU's were presented to The Princess Royal at the Official Opening of the new Magpas Headquarters in September 2023 as well as being chosen as finalists in BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Make a Difference Awards 2024 in recognition of their fundraising efforts for the life-saving charity.
Upwood Ukuleles include a wide assortment of musical styles and instruments in their shows. As well as the whole range of ukuleles from piccolo to bass, don't be surprised to hear kazoos and various percussion instruments. Audience participation is encouraged, so warm up your vocal chords ready to join in with songs ranging from George Formby classics, through 1960s novelty numbers, to current chart hits.
Upwood Ukuleles have now produced three CDs, their debut: "Onwood and Upwood; their Christmas album: "Upwood Ukuleles - With Bells On"; and most recently: "By Royal Appointment" All proceeds from the sale of the CDs go to Magpas Air Ambulance. Upwood Ukuleles do not usually charge a performance fee as such but do request a suitable donation to their designated charity, Magpas Air Ambulance, in lieu of a fee.
